The 10 most beautiful car interiors

This year, 31 vehicles were nominated, of which 10 were selected for the prestigious Best Interior award. Three of this year's winners—Honda, Lexus and Mazda—returned to once again take a spot on the Wards list, having won before in the last seven years. A crisp, straightforward dash design paired with tartan seats, all capped off by iconic gullwing doors, is certainly a package befitting of what’s considered the world’s first supercar. Jil McIntosh graduated from East York Collegiate in Toronto, and then continued her education at the School of Hard Knocks. Her early jobs including driving a taxi in Toronto; and warranty administration in a new-vehicle dealership, where she also held information classes for customers, explaining the inner mechanical workings of vehicles and their features.

But the interior must be styled and created as well, and it requires the same level of attention to detail, as well as practicality and comfort, as anything on the outside. Land Rover doesn’t have one vehicle on CR’s “Best” list, which isn’t necessarily terrible. They call it the second worst brand overall on the new market for 2024 and a must to avoid. Jaguar’s F-Type is a favorite among enthusiasts of the brand, including me. Here is their list of 5 models to avoid in 2024, and my take on each brand.

Subaru also lands its first Wards 10 Best Interiors trophy with, ironically, the least-expensive vehicle in its lineup. The fully re-engineered Impreza achieves a level of interior excellence never before seen from the Japanese brand. This collection of just 18 series examples of the Batur is the latest project by Bentley’s in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division, Mulliner—the oldest coachbuilder in the world with over 250 years of experience.

And it’s not something that’s normally open to the public, but because they threw an event, that’s how I got the opportunity to visit this design studio. The luxury brand revealed a one-of-one Continental GT Convertible S alongside several Mulliner vehicles, including the exclusive Batur grand tourer. The Genesis G90 is another fine example of using interior space to dazzle with quality fit and finish. You get the sense that Genesis only has an infotainment screen because it needs one for the rearview camera and to control the vast array of features. And the digital instrument cluster is there because suppliers no longer want to make analog dials. This year, we drove several expensive cars with high-end interiors and some more budget-friendly cars with equally striking cabins.

Tom Tremont, chief designer, describes how his studio still works as a "dedicated studio away from the mothership" and is the first to work on new platforms. He thinks that the "New Edge" look coined by Ford is only a form of vocabulary. Mr. Matano points out that it's important to have a common data set from beginning to end of a project.

When the Ontario-based newspaper Old Autos started up in 1987, dedicated to the antique-car hobby, she became a columnist starting with its second issue; the newspaper is still around and she still writes for it. Not long after the Toronto Star launched its Wheels section in 1986 – the first Canadian newspaper to include an auto section – she became one of its regular writers. She started out writing feature stories, and then added “new-vehicle reviewer” to her resume in 1999. She stayed with Wheels, in print and later digital as well, until the publication made a cost-cutting decision to shed its freelance writers. Jil McIntosh is a freelance writer who has been writing for Driving.ca since 2016, but she’s been a professional writer starting when most cars still had carburetors. These finishing touches can be added to achieve that ‘OE’ look and to complete that true personalisation process.

The Type 57 Antlantic may have been Jean Bugatti’s crowning achievement. The wood dash and massive, thin steering wheel wouldn’t be out of place on a luxury yacht. The C1 Corvette perfectly embodies the bold style of mid-century America. Its molded dash, chrome-trimmed gauges and seats integrated into the rear deck make later ‘Vettes almost low-rent. Mention automobile design, and most people think of someone drawing a sketch of the exterior.

Many of this year's winners have also been praised for features beyond their interiors by other automotive publications. Newcomers such as the Giulia, LC 500, and Continental all received acclaim for their exterior design as well as their driving capabilities, so it's no surprise they made it to Ward's list. The crown jewel of Flaminio Bertoni’s DS interior design is, of course, the elegant single-spoke steering wheel. Pair the steering wheel with that woderful dash and overstuffed seats make the Citroen a woderful place to spend time.

But most of our gripes are because the XM tries to pretend it's an M car when, really, it's a luxury car (and should've been badged as an Alpina). From an aesthetic perspective, the launch version features an exclusive new three-layer metallic color known as Acquamarina, as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customization program. It’s a color that interacts with light, revealing itself in a surprising way. The base is a pastel grey inspired by racing, reminiscent of the MC20’s sporty DNA, accompanied by an iridescent aquamarine mica that enlivens the hue.

You also get a neat little driver’s display that is easy to read and provides loads of information. For this reason the California studios have become the place where American cars are designed for European and Japanese companies. This trend toward regional designs has been going on for several years but it is now making itself felt in the marketplace. Apart from the weather, another strong influence that helps the California design studios is the proximity of the entertainment industry.
